Artist Statement
I created this piece to explore the contrasts I see across Africa — the sharp divide between wealthy and poor women, and the uncomfortable realities that exist side by side. In cities like Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg, I see ambition, influence, and opportunity growing every day. But I also see women still fighting for access to education, safety, healthcare, and financial independence.
This artwork holds that tension.
It reflects the privilege some women now occupy — positions of leadership, visibility, and economic power — while acknowledging the millions who are still navigating systemic barriers. Across the continent, movements like UN Women and the African Women’s Development Fund continue to support women stepping into spaces that were once closed to them. That shift is powerful. It is necessary. And it is only the beginning.
Through this piece, I wanted to show that power and struggle coexist. That wealth and hardship can exist within the same borders, the same communities, even the same stories. And most importantly, that the rise of African women is not just about individual success — it’s about what happens when that success is used to uplift others.
For me, this work is both a celebration and a challenge. A celebration of resilience, brilliance, and progress. A challenge to ensure that empowerment is not exclusive — that as some rise, they reach back.
This is about visibility. Responsibility. And the future we are shaping together.
The rain drops represent the tears of oppression.
