Artist Statement

Set within a space that hovers between city and landscape, this image questions whether it depicts the past or the future. At a time when the environment stands at a critical point, a figure absorbed by his phone becomes a symbol of detachment. The work reveals a paradox: hyper-connectivity coupled with disconnection from the natural world. Nature Rules challenges the viewer to consider humanity’s awareness — or lack of it — in the face of ecological fragility.

“Nature Rules” explores our relationship with time, suggesting that human existence is no more than a fleeting sparkle on the surface of the sea. Through a dual presentation, the Ambient Light Mode reveals urban Toulouse and its chaotic graffiti as the visible surface of our presence, while the Lightbox Illuminated Mode exposes what lies beyond, evoking the time before and after humanity. A lone chair recurs throughout the series, acting as a quiet marker of absence, symbolising impermanence and the transient nature of our brief occupation of the world. The work questions whether nature, in its enduring force, will ultimately reclaim what humanity has taken—asserting its quiet dominance long after we disappear.
