Artist Statement

A neglected bench — an emblem of the everyday — becomes a universal symbol of transience. It could exist in any city, anywhere. Through this familiar form, this work reflects on globalisation and the impermanence of reality, reminding us that today’s choices shape tomorrow’s world. The piece exposes the cyclical yet enduring damage caused by political and social systems, where the victims often remain unseen, fading into the margins of collective memory.

“Mirage of time” explores our relationship with time, suggesting that human existence is no more than a fleeting sparkle on the surface of the sea. Through a dual presentation, the Ambient Light Mode reveals urban Seville and its chaotic graffiti as the visible surface of our presence, while the Lightbox Illuminated Mode exposes what lies beyond, evoking the transient nature of the world around us. A lone bench/chair recurs throughout the series, also acting as a quiet marker of absence, symbolising impermanence and the transient nature of our brief occupation of the world. The work has hidden Pablo Picasso “Guernica” type characters within, reminding us of Spains history and the reoccurring nature if man .
